Lions making a comeback by Alison Lee Rubie

It has been quite some time since I have posted and I apologise for that. It’s been a hectic few months with lots to report on, but I’ll keep it brief here. I honestly feel that the beautiful African lion is set to make a comeback and in saying that I hope and pray that the numbers will increase. A lot has been happening in the world of saving lions. On March 13 at the Melbourne Global March for Lions, the Australian government announced that there will be a ban on bringing lion ‘trophies’ and lion parts into Australia effective immediately. What fantastic news! This means that if an Australian hunter would like to hunt lion while in Africa, they will not be able to bring it home and I firmly believe that this is a major step in the right direction of banning hunting.

Following this news, Sydney ran a successful event with The Feline Foundation, Animal Works, representatives from the Campaign Against Canned Hunting, Lobby for Lions and other organisations in attendance for the Global March for Lions. We heard from Clare Mann, James Aspey and MP David Shoebridge on important issues surrounding canned hunting and had the opportunity to be heard by passers-by and the general public in Sydney, spreading awareness further.

In recent news, South African Airways announced that it will no longer carry animal ‘trophies’ on board. This announcement has gained attention and has encouraged other airlines to do the same with Emirates recently announcing their ban on carrying animal ‘trophies’. We are now gaining momentum for Qantas, Lufthansa and Delta Airlines to follow in their footsteps. So please if you have the time, sign the petitions for these changes. Qantas petition here.

With these major steps and change within the world, I have no doubts that this majestic creature is set to make a strong comeback. Together we can make a difference and see lion numbers increase. Thank you for your support for The Feline Foundation. Their efforts go to helping big cats and recently I had the privilege of attending their fundraiser for the White Lion Protection Trust. I thoroughly enjoyed watching Born Free and encourage you to come along to the next one.

Til next time! ROAAARRRRR!!!
