Drawing Cats...

From the youngest age I always had a pencil in my hand, and if I wasn't drawing cats, I was having them drawn on me! Well, not literally, but I would always ask my mum to "draw cats" on my back with her fingers... When people told me as a kid that I should be an artist I was always very bored with that suggestion - I wanted to be a zoo keeper! But when I finished High School and I wasn't sure what I wanted to do I figured I may as well go to university to study art.

I completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts and STILL wasn't sure what I wanted to do, so I joined my friends and went on to complete a Bachelor of Teaching. I then landed a job as a high school Visual Arts teacher and worked in that role for the next 6 years. It turned out to surprisingly be a job I loved. But a very popular job too, with very few permanent positions. So this year I am re-training and working as a teacher librarian in a permanent position - the more qualifications the better I guess!

This year however, I've felt more artsy than ever! I constantly feel the need to pick up a pen, pencil or brush! And for a while now I've been trying to come up with the perfect cat artworks for a little project I have in mind. For those of you that don't know, I have a website where I sell a bunch of my artworks and donate the proceeds to animal rights charities - click here if you'd like to see it. But I've been wanting to do something similar, but just for cats for a while now...

Its taken me a while to create the 'perfect' cat but the other day I came across an artwork I did when I was a little girl, and my inspiration came to me out of what seemed like no where. While studying at uni I remembered I did a series of lino prints in the innocent style of childlike drawings. While my perfect cat artworks wont be completely childlike, they will be simple, and not too different from the style of my artwork below, drawn by me when I was about 7...

Stay tuned for more on my little project!
